Roughly half the population “bleeds”. It’s no wonder that period tracking technology has gained such popularity recently. The benefits of tracking your period are significant. But knowing when Aunt Flo is scheduled to arrive is just one of them. Tracking your menstrual cycle can offer many other benefits too!
We asked Ann Mullen, CT’s Health Education Director, to give us her top three reasons why we should track our menstrual cycles. Here’s what she had to say.
#1. “Your period and menstrual cycle are a marker of general health.”
When you visit the doctor, you are always asked, “When was your Last Menstrual Period?” This is because menstrual health characteristics can be an indicator of normal overall health or point to possible health conditions, including Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). So it’s a good idea to track your periods and note anything unusual. Talk to your doctor if your cycles are shorter than 21 days or longer than 35 days, or if they vary by more than 8 days from cycle to cycle. If you’re interested in learning more, we hosted a CT EduSeries webinar on the topic. Check it out here.
#2. “Period Tracking can help you determine what is normal FOR YOU.”
Your cycles vary in length a bit from cycle to cycle, but are usually in a similar range. Everyone has her own range, but the overall normal range is 21 to 35 days. Some women spot before their period, some don’t.. What’s “normal” for one person may not be normal for the next. Period tracking helps you learn your own cycle characteristics, which is informative and can feel empowering!
#3. “Period Tracking is a way to prevent pregnancy, if you use proven methods like CycleBeads® and Dynamic Optimal Timing™ (DOT).”
There are thousands of period trackers available in iTunes and the Play store. It can be confusing when trying to determine the differences among them. Very few apps can actually be used to determine accurate pregnancy risk. CycleBeads and Dot use period tracking as the means to effective preventing - or planning – of pregnancy. Both are based on effective fertility awareness-based methods. In fact, CycleBeads and Dot are family planning methods first, and period trackers second.
There are other benefits to period tracking that aren’t listed here. What’s the goal with our mobile health technologies? In short, it’s giving individuals a simple, effective, and scientific way to meet their fertility goals. It’s also addressing the gaps in meeting the unmet contraceptive needs of more than 214 million women! Dot, CycleBeads, and TwoDay Method, are family planning solutions based on years of scientific study and research with top experts in the field. They are based on proven, effective family planning methods and designed to be easy to use.
